The “What Can Cinema Do?” series invites guests from different disciplines to dedicate a lecture to cinema’s potential in relation to the crises of the present and chose a film to accompany it. This month, political science scholar Nikita Dhawan presents the film FEMINISM WTF (Austria 2023) by Katharina Mückstein: “Despite all the achievements of the women’s movement, there is still a great deal of ignorance about the goals of this social movement. Feminists are still labeled as ugly, embittered, sexually frustrated and humorless killjoys. In my opinion, it is essential to undermine and battle these stereotypes. In order for this to work, it is urgently necessary to understand how the intersectionality of hate functions. The documentary FEMINISM WTF attempts to represent the diversity of feminist activism, scholarship and practices. I hope that the film can provoke critical thinking about what gender equality and justice might look like in times of “Barbie feminism”.
